Belated birthday [Oct. 10th, 2009|12:45 am]
Hi kids

So it was my birthday a couple of weeks ago; I was up in Nantwich so didn't sort anything Cambridge based, however I would like to draw this to your attention and suggest all right thinking folk will be there. Excuses will not be tolerated unless they're very very good indeed.

Carry on.

BBQ! [May. 24th, 2009|11:27 am]
As the weather's still rather good and there's no more beer festival, I'm going to light up the bbq later. Do come over and sit in the sun :-) (Or sit inside and watch the football for a bit, some of which might happen as well...)

And a bucket list. Including the gems 'Be at the epicenter of an earthquake' and 'Live life like a monk for a month on the slopes of the himalayas'.

Hmmm.

In Other News, I'm off on a work trip later this afternoon, back late Thursday night, and oop North (Official) on Friday for the weekend.

Quantum of Solace [Nov. 2nd, 2008|05:20 pm]
Bit of advice for anyone who hasn't seen it yet and is planning on going: if you get there in time for the pre-trailer adverts, stick your fingers in your ears, shut your eyes and say 'LALALALALA' for fifteen minutes if you don't want a sneak preview of a large number of the action sequences from the film...

Won't sit down, won't shut up, and most of all i will not grow up [Oct. 30th, 2008|08:21 pm]
Went down to London last night to see Frank Turner at the Scala, which is immensely convenient for Kings Cross. He was REALLY GOOD!!! REALLY REALLY!!! I'm quite excited about how good it was. Yes. :-) That's three times this year i've seen him. I'm not sure I've managed that with any band before. Brill.

On the way down to London Village on the train, I was reading Pies and Prejudice - In Search Of The North by Stuart Maconie. Now, there's been some discussion of whether I'm Northern or not in the past, so ye pisstakers take note. I had a little dance when I got to the following passage on page 34.

"But go a little further north and you reach the spot that I would say that the north undeniably begins. Though it's in a very classy and grand county, it's far from classy and grand. It's an iconic structure though it isn't architecturally impressive or visually striking. For homecoming northeners it is the first sign that they are back in the right place, their moral and cultural compass righted. For southrons heading up country, it is here that the realisation begins that you may be in a foreign country, as the vowels flatten and the skies grow leaden and the track curves away from you to the hills and moors and chimneys of the north. Welcome to Crewe station. Please make sure you have all your belongings with you before leaving the train."

So yeah, quite good really. Even engineering works on the way back didn't screw things up. An unforeseen train got me to Stevenage earlier than expected, and from there the rail replacement bus went direct to Cambridge. Sometimes things just go *right*. Not often, but it's nice when they do. Thanks Frank.

Smash without the grab [Oct. 24th, 2008|01:46 pm]
About midnight last night I was expecting to finish my whisky (mmm, whisky) and then go to bed. I *wasn't* expecting a phone call from the police... They weren't after me, though - they wanted to speak to Katie as she has keys for Daily Bread, where the alarm was going off. She'd long since gone to bed and was understandably not very happy about being woken up! We toddled round and met the nice policemen who'd apparently already 'sent the dog round' - getting in the building not being a problem as the door had been bashed in. Bizarrely nothing seemed to've been taken; best guess is that it was related to a break-in at the co-op pharmacy they'd just been to and the sparky burglars saw 'co-operative' and didn't realise 'no - not that sort...'
So that turned into a bit of a late one as we had to wait for a man to come and bodge the door back together. Which he did remarkably quickly!

In other news, this latest in Intel's ARM-bashing is quite funny.

So against all good sense, apparently the Bee Gees can be good for you.

And the word of the day so far is 'automize', which dictionary.com doesn't think is a real word, sadly. I think that'd work; something like 'Autobots - AUTOMIZE!!!' Yeah, that works.

Edit: Ooh, here's someone with 'extensive travel ability'. Yay you!

Ooo, politics [Oct. 1st, 2008|02:35 pm]
Can't stand the Tories, but I don't see how Cameron isn't going to be the next PM so I thought I'd have a listen to his speech which was due at 2.30. Looks like he's not on yet, got Louise Bagshaw instead; she lasted 10 seconds then i turned her off. Nope, still can't stand the Tories.

Beer! [Sep. 23rd, 2008|09:47 pm]
Thursday birthday beer! I'm hijacking Rocksoc beeronthursday (see here) this week - Salisbury Arms on Tenison Road. LocalSecrets website thinks they do food 5.30-8, i'm thinking of getting there around 7 for that.

Further birthday plans, for anyone looking for something to do this weekend, involve heading Oop North - well, in truth it's more Oop Mostly West to Nantwich - there's a Bon Jovi tribute on at Crewe Limelight on Friday night, and on Saturday there's a beer festival on in Nantwich, plus Nantwich Town are playing in the FA cup. Which sounds like a pretty good weekend to me.

There was exciting poker at the weekend in the form of the bi-monthly Top Guns PokerProject tournament, this time in London at the Loose Cannon club, which turns out to be right near Tower Bridge. As it was a special occasion I pushed the boat out and put on a shirt with buttons (ooooo!) As it turned out I'd been to the venue before - a couple of years ago it was a restaurant, and Macmillan (who Katie was running for) held their pre-London marathon pasta party there. The tournament went well - too well: I was going to see the Wildhearts over in Shepherds Bush in the evening, and by five o'clock I was still doing pretty well... Cue a half hour of chaos where I threw chips at anything. It didn't start off to plan as I took a few people out in the process of chucking my chips away, woops...Finally went out on a badly misdealt hand - I wasn't bothered but at one point it did look like I'd won the hand and nearly tripled up. Which would have been a bit of a problem. In the end I was out and away down the Central Line to Holland Park (Shepherds Bush tube is closed, bah), in hotel, hout of hotel, into pub - think I missed a band while was in there - then into the Emipre, a pretty cool venue, being a proper theatre with three or four tiers of galleries. The God Damn Whores were a bit rubbish. The Wildhearts, on the other hand, were awesome :-) For the 15th anniversary of the release of Earth vs The Wildhearts, the show was a play-through of the album plus all the B-sides, and this being the Wildhearts, they're really good b-sides :-)
Back on Sunday, with a bit of difficulty due to engineering works on the train lines...
